Terms of use
StateFauna is a reference site about the snakes, spiders and scorpions recorded in each U.S. state. Use it freely, and do not use it to decide whether an animal in front of you is safe.
Accuracy
Species lists, counts, counties and months are computed by us from GBIF occurrence records, as the methodology sets out. Records can be misidentified or placed wrongly, and a species can live in a state with no record there, while a single record can be a stray or a released pet. Venomous status follows the taxonomy of the species, not the animal you see.
Not advice
Nothing here is medical advice or a substitute for it. For any bite or sting, call 911 in an emergency or Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 (free, 24/7, U.S.-wide). Do not handle or try to identify a snake or spider by this site; if unsure, treat it as venomous.
Content and reuse
Presence: a species is listed for a state from at least 10 GBIF records of wild animals under any license, because that a species lives somewhere is a fact, not a work. Numbers: every count, share, month and county is computed only from records published under CC0 1.0 or CC BY 4.0; reuse them with credit to GBIF and to the datasets listed on the methodology page.
Species descriptions quoted from Wikipedia are under CC BY-SA 4.0 and are credited, with a link to the article, on each page; reuse them under the same license. Photos are used under public domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA, with the author and license of each named on the photo credits page; reuse a photo only under its own license.
The rest of the text, the comparisons and the arrangement of the site are ours. Quote us with a link; do not republish the site wholesale.
